How can I make/use a hopback?

How can I make/use a hopback?

I have a simple ten gallon brewery. I don't have a pump and I'm avoiding HERMS/RIMS because of the extra cleaning and setup time. Can I use a hopback without a pump? Is the wort normally run through the hopback hot, or cold? Thanks.
