PANIC ! My mash strainer is blocked!

Post by Blackjack » Sat May 15, 2010 2:36 pm

Just having an ongoing disaster with my new mashtun. Argos £16 coolbox with a full copper pipe manifold in the bottom with literally dozens of hacksaw cuts through the underside. Just came to run the wort off and after a pint or so it has blocked up and dried to a trickle.
Apart from making a bad situation worse by pouring the mash back and forth in a bucket with a sieve what can I do.

Ideas and suggestions please :!: :?: :!: :?:

Try gently blowing into the tap on your mash tun, preferably using plastic tubing. This should free the blockage, when you start the run off again, do so slowly.

Just a thought, how is your strainer connected to the tap? I'm just wondering if it has come adrift.

Two great replies, thank you, my initiative had not extended as far as blowing back, and indeed I was wishing I did have a fermenter with a tap and a sparge bag.

Will take it a biot slower as well.
