Irish Moss question

Post by dopejack » Wed May 26, 2010 9:42 pm

Hi all
just wondering, are there any reasons NOT to use Irish Moss? i.e., any baddies in there? Only reason I'm asking is that I forgot to use it in my last brew, but it's come out fantastically clear anyway. I appreciate I was probably just lucky, but think I'll try without again next time, especially if there is any contra-indication.
Cheers

Not using it isn't a big disaster. You'll get a lot of cold break in the FV. So what? It'll just settle harmlessly out. You may also get a bit of a chill haze. So what? Only nasty-tasting beer needs to be chilled. Just serve your beer at room temperature and enjoy its real taste ;)

Having said all that I'm finding Protofloc to be far more effective that Irish Moss.
Best wishes

In fact I'll verify range to target by sending another ping... :)

I noticed a HUGE difference swapping from Irish Moss to Protofloc with regards my cold break material; this is only my conclusion however...

I had a massive change for the better today using Super Moss HB, which is a powdered form of whirlfloc but way better, the best thing it continues to work into the fermenter, which i can see a good 3/4 inch or so of crud in there already and its only been done for a couple of hours.

Another thumbs-up for protafloc here. Was getting very poor coagulation of break material using Irish Moss and routinely ending up with a sludgy mess in the FV. As OSB says, it probably doesn't make too much difference and I've made some good beers like this. However, I've recently switched to Protafloc and the boiler run-off has been crystal clear every time.
