Bobek - Bramling Cross TTL

Post by HighHops » Mon Jun 28, 2010 11:21 pm

I'm thinking of making a TT Landlord type AG brew at the weekend. Grahams recipe uses golding and styrian golding, but I'm thinkin Bobek (which I think a recent hops post established is one of the styrians) and Bramling cross which I'm sure I read is a golding variety. I've never used either before, but wanted to try something different.

So, anyone tried this combination before. Probably more Bramling cross for bittering and Bobek split 50:50 between bittering and aroma. I might use some vienna malt as well, for say 10 - 20% grain bill. I've just made my starter up from a couple of bottles of Fullers Bengal lancer for a weekend brew.

Whaddya think? Will it work? [-o<

I've got some Brambling X hops that I've not yet dared to use. They impart a blackcurrant flavour from what I've read so I keep putting off using them. :(

I've made a single-hop BX brew. I wouldn't really say it tastes like blackcurrants, certainly not the way that Ribena does. However, i would say that it's a very dull taste with no real character. Perhaps a bit of sweetness and fruitiness but nothing much else.

I think it'd be absolutely fine for bittering.

go for it! I'm sure you'll wind up with an excellent and unique ale, should be a refresher actually. Dunno 'bout the Vienna....but I have some Munich lying around and am thinking about a challenger/bobek hop mix with MO and Munich at 5% (ish).
As Vinnie Jones wou;d say
'PUT IT IN THE MIXER!'

heh heh - well spotted!

I've used Bramling cross a few times - one thing I've noticed is that it works better with beers that you'll drink young. It really loses it's particular character quickly and after 6 months (yeah I know, I hear choruses of 'who manages to hold onto their brews that long, but I have at least one bottle of every brew I've made in the last 10 years), begins to do that cat-piss thing. The blackcurrant thing (whilst being picked up on by my missus - unprompted), was something I wasn't too sure of ... probably because I like to add shed loads of all hops :D

Go for it, give it a go, I think your hop bill is excellent, especially with some of Fuller's yeast.

I may be wrong on this but isn't/wasn't Bramling x used in Tetleys (cask ale) ?

Which actually isn't a bad pint (compared with the icky nitro keg/canned stuff)

Which if I recall correctly is only very lightly fruity - but suitably 'northern' and frothy!

But then again this could be one of those hop descriptions that I 'simply dont get' along with Green bullet being like styrians...

But then again I don't get jazz music either...
:D
