Help finding malt

Post by koomber » Thu Jul 01, 2010 10:42 am

I'm about to take a step up to all-grain and to try and improve my understanding I was trying to build a Brewdog Paradox Imperial Stout Clone. This is theoreticla at the moment, but by the end of it I would hope I could make it (whether it tastes okay is another question!).
Using the info on the Brewdog website I've found a list of grains that they use and managed to find info and suppliers for most of them. The only one I am struggling with is the Dark Crystal Malt (as they call it at Brewdog)

They have a Dark Crystal Malt on the Brupak website and acording to them it comes in with a colout of 230-250EBC (About 85 SRM, if I worked it out right).
The description according to the brupak website is:
A very dark crystal malt which has undergone a substantially extended kilning. Use in beers that require a deep copper colour without too much crystal character, or in porter and old ale.

Does anyone have any suggetions as to what would be a suitable malt and where to get it from.

As mentioned earlier I'm doing this to imrpove my understanding of the theroy behind brewing, but I would like to make this. Given that PAradox weighs in at 10%ABV and I have small mash tun/boiler, the volume of this I would make would be quite small.

There are several crystal malts available with varying colours. The darkest you usually see is the 200EBC one you mention. It's available in most of the good homebrew retailers....(Hop and Grape for example). There is a darker grade (400EBC) that's stocked by a few retailers (BrewUK and Barley Bottom for example). I would expect however that the Brew Dog beer uses the 200EBC version. Why don't you email brew dog and ask them. They'll either tell you or they won't.

That looks about right! Cheers guys. should be getting some brew books from SWMBO so I'll use them to help me formulate my Paradox clone (by clone I mean nothing like it!)
