Lagering in cornies

Another dumb question about lagering in corny kegs.
Is it necessary to keep the gas on the keg while lagering? Or just drop lager in, gas, purge, and then put the lid on and stick it in the freezer.

thats pretty much what I do, seems fine so far. Only difference is I don't have a freezer so try to make it all in the winter and stick it in the shed when its freezing outside.
