I've checked it this morning and checked the gravity, and as it turned out it was way off. I topped it up with water to 22.7 litres (thanks to that nifty equation, I knew this would be the right amount).
It all seems sorted now, so thanks everyone for helping me out.

Apologies Mr. Wheeler for blaming your book! #-o

The book isn't perfect - it is a starting point - no more, no less. Nevertheless, do not believe everything that is said on the Interweb, including a large proportion of the advice on JBK . The book let you down, and I apologise for that. It is difficult for a seasoned brewer to think of all the pitfalls that may befall a new brewer; I was a new (all-grain) brewer in 1979 - a long time ago. I will also add that much of what I wanted to say in that book was trimmed out due to space constraints.

From what I can deduce from the limited information that you disclosed, you did not do that badly at all.

Hi Tom,
If you are in Salford (which is in Greater Manchester  ) I could help you out with most of your initial problems into all grain brewing as I live about 20 miles north of you or half an hours drive away. If you want I could look at your gear and give you some advice/help. I also believe you are looking to convert a steel pot - if so I have all the tools you should need including Q-max cutters & cobalt drill bits (you wouldn't believe how much easier it is to drill through stainless steel with one of these instead of a a HSS drill bit!). If you want you could visit and have a look at my set up to get ideas or answer any questions you may have.
Trying to be of help for a fellow all grain brewer,
Ben
