To skim the yeast or not ??

Post by nobby » Sun Aug 08, 2010 10:36 am

I am using a new to me yeast, Brewlab Boarder. It’s almost finished but there is a nice yeasty layer on top of the beer. Should I leave this or skim it off and allow the beer to mature a while without it??? The other yeasts I have used WP005 etc don't leave anywhere this amount.

If you are planning on doing another brew fairly soon you could skim to keep and re-pitch it :)
I've never purposefully skimmed unless I have a use for the yeast.

I tend to just skim any brown scummy bits.

I used to skim, but then I got forgetful. The forgetfulness evolved into laziness. The beer never seemed to suffer, so I forgot that I used to skim until you posted this thread.

Unless I want fresh yeast for another brew or to bake with, I just leave it.

I rarely skim, but if the beers almost finished and theres a layer which is starting to dry out I figure why risk off flavours when it falls into the beer and I'd skim
