A sheet of cling wrap held down with the rubber seal from the fermenter lid works fine and prevents any bugs or nasties getting in, you can see in easily and also saves work/effort with the airlock/lid/sanitation etc.

Hehe, once found a cat swimming around in a batch of stout, but that had nowt to do with airlocks  ! I use the loose lid approach, just resting it on the rim of the FV in such a way that gas can escape but insects and the like can't enter, and make certain that the lid is never disturbed between the cessation of visible fermentation and bottling. Mind you,I've been thinking about airlocks since the recent thread on 'ropey beer'. I found that quite distressing and really don't want any of that. No Sir - it'd put me off for life!
