Using DME to raise OG

Post by Deebee » Fri Sep 17, 2010 4:51 am

I an planning a RIS in the near future. It would appear that many have problems hitting target on these and need to bump the OG with some extract.
Here is the question though. If i have an og of say 1080, and want to lift it to nearer 1100 how much extract per litre must i use?

In 23L for eg it would raise your 1080 wort by 16.2pts to 1096.

If you want to raise it by 20 pts (to 1.100):

20/16.2 x 1 = 1.23 kg
so i am doing a 15 litre brewlength.

so somewhere around the 400 g mark would be sufficient right?

More like 800g if my maths is right

The formula is all there - someone more qualified in mathematics than me may be kind enough put it into a more recognizable formula.
W = L * P/374

Where W = wt (in kilos) of DME
L = vol (in Litres) of wort
P = No of points by which to raise wort

Hope this helps

Chris-x1 wrote:Yep. You may need more than a litre given the quantity of dme. It may be easier to take a few litres of wort and boil it in a large pan although if it is a freshly opened bag, add it directly to the fermenter.
I'd be worriede about the stuff being lumpy. I guess i'd mix with wort or water and chuck it in. Alternatively i could take an og before the boil. I guess the estimate on beersmith would be about right?
If not i'd wait to pitch the yeast until i had a definate og after the boil and adjust from there. Thanks for everyones help.
