Because all my brews go straight into cornies i'm wandering if I can filter my beer after the 1st fermentation as at the moment I ferment for a week then clear for a few days. But if I was to filter it would take away the 2nd step. Does anyone have any experience with this and would it be viable or would there bee too much risk of infection?
Many Thanks
Filtering??
Re: Filtering??
Have you ever tried just transferring straight from the FV to the keg after primary?
You may get away with it depending on the beer style (not such a good idea with a crisp clean lager) and the yeast (need a yeast with good flocculation).

Re: Filtering??
I have tried before but ended up with too much sediment for my liking (took ages to clear, and used too much beer out of the keg trying to clear it). Would the filters they use in making wine work? My main concern would be keeping air out? What about inline water filters?

Re: Filtering??
What yeast did you use?
I use s04 and get very little sediment after kegging straight after primary.
You could always try and leave it longer in the primary to clear more. I don't like the idea of filtering, could cause any number of problems from oxidation to contamination to losing certain characteristics of the beer to the filter.
But you could always try filtering a smaller batch and see if it works ok.

Re: Filtering??
Wouldnt work.
The cloud is generally yeast, which is good!
When you transfer to your keg, your beer is still live, the yeast is still working. If you filtered it out, it would inevitably miss a bit, yeast would transfer, and it would recolonise, remaining in suspension and keeping your beer cloudy. If you got a proper hitech filter, that would handle it, but do you really want to do that? It seems like just turning craft brewed ale into something far worse in quality... Not to mention, your beer would be eternally green and would never condition!

Re: Filtering??
Thanks for the replys, looks like filtering is a no go, i'm using s-04 in my latest brews (although they have been fermenting for around 10 days now!!) so I might transfer straight to cornie and see how it goes.
Many thanks.
Many thanks.

Re: Filtering??
I transfer to a keg even BEFORE primary is complete. With S04 I have no problem and the beer still clears about a week after transfer.
