Magnum and Beata together?

Post by Invalid Stout » Wed Feb 10, 2010 4:57 pm

Doing a light pale ale, pseudo-lager if you like, OG around 1.037. I have a load of Magnum in the freezer so thinking of using those for bittering. As finishing hops Beata. It' the first time I've used either, but people say Beata is a good lager hop, so I'm hoping they will go well with the good old German high-alpha Magnum. Any thoughts? Will I get any unpleasant flavour using just high-alpha hops? It'll be something like 15g Magnum at 75 mins, 20g Beata at 10mins, 10g Beata at 0 mins for a total 40 IBU.

Well, I've just transferred the beer to a polypin and it seems to have turned out quite nicely. Beata is a lovely hop, very perfumey, pears and lavender type of aroma. I was worried I'd used too much Magnum, it's something ridiculous like 16% alpha acid, but it's just right. Now dry hopping with more Beata in the polypin ...

Magnum is a great bittering hop, they were 15.7 %AA, although it dosen't actually have a bad aroma either.

I've used it quite a bit recently, gives a good clean bittering taste. Should go well with just about any good aroma hops.

Did you do this yet InvalidStout? I happen to have magnum and beata in the freezer too and would like to use them in a similar manner, a light golden ale, simple as poss for those hot summer days (oh yeah!).
Sumat Like 4Kg Malt to a 23Lt brew with bittering to 35ish with magnum bittering and beata at the end...bottled so as I can chill them for our lagerdrinkers. About 4%.

Yes I did, it's still conditioning but it tasted pretty good out of the fermenter when I was transferring it.

Doing this again tonight, but with more hops.

20g Magnum and 45g Beata to start with, then another 45g Beata as late hops. It's going to be nice, I hope.
