Lil help please; I keep trying to work this out; but I get a different result each time:
I had a starting gravity of 1.057 (9.5L brew)
After primary had finished I added 500ml of steeped Hop tea at 1.000 (Up to 10L)
Final Gravity is 0.006 (Very Dry!)
The calculated ABV is 5.86% but obviously that would be wrong; How would I work out the actual ABV?
Gravity Maths
Re: Gravity Maths
Adding 0.5L to 9.5L dilutes by roughly 5%, so your OG could be corrected to 1.054 (5% of 57 is about 3)
54-6 = 48
48 x 0.131 = 6.288%

54-6 = 48
48 x 0.131 = 6.288%

I brew therefore I ... I .... forget

I actually gave you the wrong numbers, sorry, But the maths works.
So the brew is:
2.30 kg Pale Malt, Maris Otter (3.0 SRM) Grain 90.20 %
0.15 kg Caramel/Crystal Malt - 20L (20.0 SRM) Grain 5.88 %
0.10 kg Barley, Flaked (1.7 SRM) Grain 3.92 %

I always get a very low finishing SG but that's the lowest yet; I'm not sure why!
Re: Gravity Maths
What temp do you mash at? Have you checked your termometer, low mash temps lead to a more fermentable wort
Re: Gravity Maths
I did mash 65'C for a light body but Beer Smith still predeicted an FG of 0.014 with the efficiency set to 72% but I nearly always go below Beersmith FG.
I do have an excellent room for fermenting where the temp stays within 1' of 19'c all the time, perhaps it's a factor.
It's not a big problem; I like a dry beer, but it can be a bit thin tasting when it goes that low.

Re: Gravity Maths
Take a temperature reading of boiling water and see if your thermometer is out.
It should read 100'c or ever so slightly less if you're significantly above sea level.
You could also take the temperature of ice water, it should be about 0'c - 1'c.

Re: Gravity Maths
I know my thermometers are good, i always use glass thermo's never digital anymore they're more trouble than they're worth. And I think York is at about sea level.
