Brewing sugar

Post by dwhyte » Mon Oct 11, 2010 4:01 pm

Hi all,

Got some Hambleton Bard 'brewing sugar'. It says it is dextrose on the bag and is in powder form.
A couple of quick questions I thought of;
What quantities is it used in i.e. 1-1 with cane sugar granules?
Being dextrose, will it have unfermentables which will sweeten the beer?

I remember in the nineties getting bags of glucose from LHBS's even though G.Wheeler always said we could never get pure glucose in the home brew arena. :?
What happened to those?

-Yes 1-1 is as near as damnit.
-No, dextrose is highly fermentable (slightly more than table sugar)

How much did you pay? Some supermarkets sell it at £1 for 500g.

Use the brewing sugar as a direct substitute for normal sugar, so 1 to 1.

I also used to use glucose in the 80's and 90's. I used it anywhere that sugar or invert sugar was called for.
It's still available:

I have no idea whether this counts as "pure glucose" but it says "glucose" on the label.

£2 per Kilo bag.

Ah so confusing dextrose for dextrins then :oops:

Dextrose is the 'old' name for glucose. Table sugar 'sucrose' is a glucose molecule and a fructose molecule joined together. I think dextrins are a chain of 3 or more sugar molecules joined togherther which arn't easily fermentalable to some beer yeast. Hope this helps a little

You'll find 100% sugar makes an odd beer. On the other and I find 100% malt is great
