2.4Kw Elements, what is their limit

Post by wilfy1970 » Tue Dec 14, 2010 9:56 pm

I have put the 2.4Kw element from the woefully inadequate electrim bin in to an 80 L stainless steel pot,

Does anybody know, or have experience of what is the limit of this element in litres?

As ever, I look forward to any answers.

taking in to account that you wouldn't want to fill the 80 litre pot to the brim:-

60 litres of 15C water with a 2.4kW element will come to a boil after 2.5 hours but I wouldn't expect this to be able to attain a rolling boil. It might simmer a bit.

40 litres of 15C water will boil after 1.5 hours. This, if well insulated will probably get to a rolling boil. If it's coming from a mash tun (ie around 60C), it will boil after 50 mins.

To get a rolling boil going in a reasonable time for 60 litres you really need another element, coming out of the tun this will boil in about 40 mins.

Hope this helps.

There is a calculator that can work out how long this will take here - http://www.jimsbeerkit.co.uk/calc.html

It'll take 3 hours to bring 80L to the boil, according to that. I think you are going to need at least one more element in there. It is very common to have 2 elements, running from separate mains sockets, to reduce the time it takes to boil large quantities of liquid.

I used the 80L pot as it was obviously bigger than the bin that came as the electrim. I am in the process of fitting another element, but was going to make a couple of 25L brews until I get around to fitting another one.
With the wort temperature at around 60c when out of the mash tun, a bit of insulation, and the pre boil quantity being around the low 40 Litres, I take it this will do me until I get another element in then.
