I'm nowhere near you ashidan, but I've wondered a few times if there's a better use for spent grains than going in my dustbin. Are they ok for chickens and other fowl?

We would probably all be willing to give our spent grains away. I'm not sure you would get enough from one brewer for your purposes. you would be better approaching a micro brewery unless you can arrange for a load of members in one area to all brew on the same day.

Where in Lancs are you?

I wondered if you could put the spent grains in the compost bin > If not I have a friend who keeps chickens. Last saturdays grains are around the base of an apple tree as mulch.

You can compost grains, but by Christ does it stink. Definitely not recommended. Chickens are the way to go.

I feed some of my spent grains to my chickens and they love it. But as I've only two chickens, they don't eat very much before it starts to go very mouldy. So I have been putting it in my compost bin and its great as it really attracts the worms. My composter has a lid and when you take the lid off there are hundreds of worms eating the grain.
However my compost bin is full at the moment so I've started giving my grain away to a friend who keeps pigs.

Hi,

I gave all my spent grain to my lambs last year, we are eating them at the moment and the meat is fantastic! The chickens and lambs would fight over the pile of steaming grain, funny to watch!

When I'm not feeding it to the horse, it goes to a mate who keeps 8 hens. . .If they don't get it then I use it as a mulch. . . . However, if you use it as a thick mulch it does stink to high heaven, I spread it an inch or so thick and then just gently work it in to the first couple of inches of soil with a hoe / rotovator.

Ashley, I suggest sticking an advert on your local Freecycle/Freegle.
You'll probably need to be a bit flexible with collecting it because it has a very short shelf life but I expect you will get loads of offers from home brewers.

As for the other uses for it, chickens love it and it composts very well too. I freeze portions for our three chickens. It occupies a big chunk of freezer space but they love chasing a frozen lump of grain round the garden and it's entertaining to watch.
