First AG under way

Post by theakronbranch » Thu Apr 07, 2011 9:27 am

Hi all my first AG is under way the mash is sitting there doing its thing for 90 mins and i am busy weighing out my hops

There is one thing i just want to clear up my recipe calls for the following hops

BITTERING HOPS

Chalenger 43 g at 90 mins
Fuggels 23 g at 15 mins

So I add the challenger as my wort comes to the boil and the fuggels 15 mins from the end (75 mins into boil)

The bit i am not 100 percent on is the aroma hops it calls for 23g of Bobek for 30 mins

Do i add these after the boil whilst cooling if so what happens if my wort takes to long/fast to cool

cheers

Hi acron what is the full recipe ? the bobek with it being aroma could be steeped for 30 mins at 80c therefore after 90 mins of boil cool to 80c throw in the bobek and let them steep for 30 mins stirring gently every 5 mins or so. If you post the full recipe it will give us a better idea

It's best practice to cool to 80 but if your cooling the wort reasonably quickly you could just shove them in when you turn the boil off.

Yes i agree with it being your first brew it makes it simpler 80c from boiling comes very quickly indeed, chuck them in as you switch off (flame out) cool to 80c then stir gently every 5 mins for 30mins, cool to just above pitching temp 25c ish then i usually leave the brew to stand for 30 or so mins (depends what else i am doing) this allows the hop bed to form and the trub to settle on it giving cleaner run off

Hi all

Thanks for all your help today, as far as I can tell it has been a successful first brew.

Will post a bit more in depth later but basically ended up with only 20l instead of 23l

And the og came out at 1053 instead of 1050 if I remember correctly I am hoping this will be ok will find out in a week or 2 =D>

What was the disaster pas

Thanks again

Well done mate 1053 is good you will be able to start making adjustments now in future brews a few more litres of liqour to get up to your 23l and it will drop your OG a few points etc.
My day was full of issues massive boil over and had to throw some more bittering hops in so no idea if there are too many or not enough. then my usual 30 min rest after cooling ended up 70 mins for reasons beyond my control and to cap it all the tap on th eboiler stuck full of hop leaves (no idea how filter seemed ok ) so took an age to run off :( still hopefully i will have beer soon unless the damned repitched yeast slurry has issues lol
Get your next one planned asap mate no looking back now its addictive :D
