Dried isinglass - how to use?

Post by jat147 » Mon Feb 28, 2011 8:02 pm

Evening ,

I've got an IPA in fv that I want to put into my polypin.
I got a pack of dried isinglass from Brupaks, and it tells me to add a teaspoon
to 500ml water whilst whisking to form a 'homogenous blend' ?

I used cooled boiled water, and sterilised everything - but the bottle full i made
is far from a blend, it's just specks floating around on the water?

How do i make this stuff dissolve? This cant be right to add to the brew??

I've found you have to add the isinglass to water and let it rest to hydrate for an hour or more. Then I attack it with a stick blender a few times over a day or so to get it blended. You'd probably need to start the process a a day or so before you need the isinglass to ensure it's well mixed.

p.s. I might buy the resdy made stuff in the future!

You should really use some Citric acid which will 'cut' the fish maws into the finished isinglass. Just soaking it in water and leaving it doesnt really get all the good stuff out.

This is my method, based on daab(chris)'s long thread from a while ago:
  • Boil 500ml of water and cool
  • Rack off chalk sediment into sanitised pyrex jug, cool
  • Add 1ml of CRS
  • Add a teaspoon of isnglass
  • Blitz using stick blender for 2 mins
  • Leave in fridge for at least 4 hours (best to leave overnight though)
  • Blitz again for 2 mins
Which seems to work well, without too much hassle.
