Caramalt

Post by far9410 » Fri Jan 13, 2012 8:27 am

Hi all
Collecting some supplies from murphy and son today, among this I've ordered some caramalt . Never used this before, what does it give to a beer and what type of brews would benefit from adding it?

Cheers

I'm Nottingham based and didn't realise they did a collection service.
That makes them very competitive for me for grains and hops

Caramalt is a type of crystal malt.
It gives a little sweetness and body. It's good to use when you don't want a dry beer. I use a bit in most of my ales, perhaps 2-3% as standard, 5% if you want a noticable sweet character. It'll also add a bit of colour.

Thanks dave, just picked it up, smells great.

The service at Murphy and son was great, and with the saving on postage was a good price,

If anyone in the nottingham area wants to order and collect, then email Paul Taylor and he will arrange it, [Paul.Taylor@murphyandson.co.uk]

Use it as you would crystal, I much prefer it to crystal myself and have done some brews with a resonably high level of caramalt with traditional hops like Goldings and Fuggles to good effect.

Well, I enjoyed them anyway

It gives body and sweetness but less colour than crystal, so good in light or golden ales etc. I started using it a few months back in place of crystal in my lighter colour brews, good results too.
If I had all the money I'd spent on brewing... I'd spend it on brewing!
