Dunkelweizen - Low pre boil gravity

Post by danwlx » Sun Feb 19, 2012 3:01 pm

Hi all, I'm just in the middle of a brewday with the below recipe. This is my 6th all grain brew but my first wheat beer. My pre boil gravity is 1.032 which is lower than expected as I was looking for a og (post boil) of 1.052. Is there any techniques needed with wheat to get a decent efficiency or is my recipe off? Also, should i boost the gravity with dme or leave as is?

Thanks for any help!

23 litres

3.893 kg - Wheat malt (66,3%)
1kg - Munich I (17.1%)
0.491kg - Munich II (8.4%)
0.301kg - Special B (5,1%)
0.180kg - Carafa III (3.1%)

It depends what volume of pre boil wort you've got. If you've got 37L then you're bang on. Also bare in mind you need to measure sg at 18C. If its hot it will measure lower.

Use this link to measure dilution or what your final sg will be and this link to allow for temperature differences when taking sg.

Failing that, was your mash temp, pH etc all ok?

Thank for the reply Cestrian. It was measured at 20C and I had collected 31L. However, post boil I am at 23L @ 1.052, so I guess that I must of had a false reading with the hydrometer sticking to the sample jar

So actually my smoothest brewday yet!
