So I appear to have fluked this one a little. Plenty of lessons learnt.
Dont top up after sparge. I will go back to previous way and work from final amount.

Secondly, READ THE RECIPE PROPERLY U PLONKER!

fego wrote:I'm not confused. You're first reading was 1036 but you were hoping for 1058 per the recipe and were disappointed until a further reading showed 1048.

I reckon you've done really well actually because you only boiled for 60 minutes but that recipe calls for 90 mins so if you have followed all other aspects, your loss is mostly down to the short boil. Also, you original reading was presumably with a hydrometer in a sample jar where the temperature affects the reading. Ther is a converter in the back of the book to adjust for accuracy, but it sounds like you have taken it as gospel without adjustment and latterly seen the more accurate reading after it cooled to room temp.

Your volumes can be adjusted much more easily as you learn more about your equipment, but you have made beer and it will have been worth the effort. Keep going.....
+1 to this.

You weren't to far off the target after all. Your second sample at 1.048 was taken 12 hours after your first post on this thread so who knows if your yeast had started work then they may have shaved a couple of points off already. The great thing is you have identified the potential problem areas and next time will be better placed to smooth out your process. Let us know how it turns out.
