I've looked at a few of these, including the one that I have on my phone.
I used one of these calcs for the first time when bottling my first American Brown Ale, I normally just guess my amounts based on how I think the yeast has performed and carb'd up other brews etc (most of the time this is near as damn it, 70-something brewdays can't be wrong!)
The 'Beer Temp at bottling' section of these online calculators relies heavily on the beer having not fluctuated in temperature and having not been warmed for say a D'rest then cooled again to settle the yeast out.
Using the Calc on my last brew gave me a very light carbonation, its not bad but I'd have liked a little more...
Are these things really that clever / accurate?

Re: Bottle carbonation calculators
I use the tastybrew one, or a phone app. Trouble is the range of vols that it suggests is fairly wide, so i find that that I might make the same style 2 or 3 times before I decide the best quantity of sugar to use. The calculators are useful as a guide though.

So far I have relied on the calculator plumbed in to BeerSmith2, It has been incredibly reliable and adjust for bottle or keg and allows you to decide how many volumes of CO2 you prefer to have. The only time I disagreed with it's suggestion is the only time I've been disappointed at the result. There's a reason why these people ar way better brewers than I am.

The one on beer alchemy has been pretty reliable for me! I usually set the temp at whatever the ambient average temp of the spare room is and leave it at that!

that sounds more like it, I'll try it myself when my new phone arrives

Re: Bottle carbonation calculators

Yeah! Where I says fermentation temp, I've always considered that to mean the temp young he refermentation in the bottle! Seems to have worked ok for me so far!
