Doing First AG right now

Post by mattybabsy » Wed Apr 11, 2012 9:50 am

Hi there

I'm in the middle of my first AG- the liquor water is coming to temp. how do I know how much of it to add to the MT for doughing in? I read somewhere that a ratio of 2.5 L per kilo of grain is good? what do you all think?

thanks

2.5 to 3 is good 3 might be easier to measure.

thx-

I'm making a wheat beer- just about to put my grains into the MT and realised the wheat flakes aren't crushed- should I give them a bash?

thx

good luck fella - I admire your cavalier style. I have heard of "just do it", but this is another level.

Yeah, give them a bash. Why not?

What are you doing next?

Wheat flakes must be crushed - the clue is in the title...?

I can't help think a little more prep might have been a good idea.
How are you getting on, Matty?

You don't need to wait. As soon as it starts boiling you can add 90 min hops and start the clock. Get them in you will be there all day otherwise

Good luck Matty! I did my second AG today and it was a nightmare, my first was much less stressful! Sounds like yours is going okay too.

Brave man, mattybabsy!!!

Starting your first ever AG without being certain about the liquor:grain ratio has to be a first. Glad to know the mash went OK, though, and you got the gravity you wanted.

Hope the boil went well and the fermentation got off to a good start.

If you need any practical help later on with the really difficult stuff, such as getting the finished beer into a glass and down your throat, just give a shout. There's loads of people on here who could help out with that part of the process!!

Best of luck with this first AG. there'll be no turning back now.

Guy
