How long??????

Post by Jules T » Tue Apr 17, 2012 11:16 pm

I'm going to brew a Crouch Vale Willie Warmer tomorrow and i've just noticed the the recipe calls for a mash time and boil time of 2 hours

i've always done 90 mins for both in the past and i'm wondering if this is really necessary.

Any thoughts?

You wouldnt have much wort left after a 2 hr boil in an open kettle LOL :)

Personally, i only do an hour each, I recollect even once doing a 1/2hr vigorous boil and it made little (if any being honest) difference to my usual beer.

The mash, you could stick to the 2 hr just to be sure of a good end result.

TBH again, over an hour to me seems more of a waste of time, its all trial and error though, so really its what suits you, but personally, id do a 1hr boil and mash.

Brew on, lee

Cheers Lee,

i think i'll stick to what i know works for me on this time so no 4 hour marathon mash and boil, like you say i'm sure it won't make a massive difference to the end product.

Although after over 2 years of AG brewing this morning for the first time i'd doughed in the grain, put the lid on mt mash tun and turned around to see the hop srtrainer sitting onthe kitchen table

All the fun of AG brewing i suppose :!:

That's OK as long as you didn't add hops to the mash then.

;)

Hopped mash :-k

Was reading John Palmer's How to Brew and he advocates lower mash time and boil times. Temperature is far more important to the mash than time so I reckon you should do what you normally do. Where did the recipe come from?

Marc Ollosson? Very good recipes but like Wheelers a little dated now.

He does say; Hop weights are based on a minimum boil of 90min being used. A 2hr boil isn't necessary but
it does improve the keeping qualities of the final beer.

Mashing a portion of hops is supposed to have the same effect (if you believe there is an effect) as FWH. Views are
split on that subject but I recently mashed some pellets in a big IPA and It looks like it may be a great beer, I can't
say it's down to that though

No, just a normal mash, no hops.

I seem to be back on track now, i batch sparge and the first run off of wort is just about done. On the upside, for the first time in about 4 brews i haven't got a stuck mash =D>

Half the fun of AG is that it never quite happens the same way twice :D

There is much debate on the merits of different boiling and mash times.

I am yet to be convinced there is any difference between a 1 hour and 90 min boil and people seem to do whatever they initially learnt to do and are used to.

My attitude is that if it ends up tasting good then keep doing what you're doing...

That's not bad Jules , in two years of A/G brewing I've forgotten the hop filter twice.....or is it thrice

The only difference forgetting to put the hop filter in seems to have made is the amount of additional clearing up after trying to pour 20 odd litres of hot sticky grist into my fv so i could fit the **kin thing :!:

Try 56L coming up to a rolling boil , turning around to grab the 90 min hops and seeing the hop strainer hanging off the bottle tree =D> (can you slow this emoticon down ? ) .
