How much ground coriander?
How much ground coriander?
Just a quickie, was going to do a wheat beer and have some of the stuff handy, does anyone know how much will give me a layer of taste in the beer and not be to overpowering in a 23l brew?
It says "ground coriander" on the label and i'm assuming its ground seeds because its brown and smells slighty spicy, cant be leafs can it?

Re: How much ground coriander?
I love coriander in beers. Have only ever ground it fresh from seed though as I want it as fresh as can be. I usually go for 20g in a 25L beer. Would happily go higher!
Re: How much ground coriander?
Thanks, i may start around that level then.
When i take a smell from the jar it keeps reminding me of blue moon.

Yeppers - 20 - 25 g in 23l. Needs a good few weeks of conditioning to come through. Worth the wait.
Re: How much ground coriander?
I also have used about 20g in 5 gallons a couple of times. I don't use the ready ground stuff but grind up the seeds.
Also its worth seeking out the Indian coriander seeds. They are oval shaped not round and paler in colour than the common ones that supermarkets sell. I find that they have a more fragrant aroma and a slight lemony taste which complements the rest of the ingredients better.

Re: How much ground coriander?
I just used 40g in a 27 litre brew wheat beer
Recipe I based it one had 50g for a 23l brew... too early to tell I guess but it smells good in the FV
I've also been wondering about using coriander leaf, slung in at the end of the boil. I guess the leaf would also help with the hops for filtering but I'm not sure if the coriander flavours and aromas we seek are those of the leaf or the more citrus seeds.
I might just go the whole hog and try a Garam Masala and chilli beer

Just realised this is what I already use! I buy them from a Turkish food shop. Might plant some and grow me some Indian coriander.floydmeddler wrote:Defs going after these! That's a hefty amount alright! I don't fancy the leaf in a beer - could be wrong though. Let us know how this turns out. I might be brave enough to go for 40g next time.stevetk189 wrote:I just used 40g in a 27 litre brew wheat beer![]()

I used 30g of seeds in a light wit and it gave a nice touch without being overpowering. I ground them up with a blender and the smell was wonderful!!

Re: How much ground coriander?
I'm not sure if this photo will be clear enough to see but I hand ground the coriander seeds quite coarsely in a pestle and mortar. They certainly weren't anywhere near to powdered. Smelled great going in the copper, not overpowering at all and if anything I was a little underwhelmed.

If I remember that far back I couldn't taste them at all initially - and then after about 4-5 weeks in the bottle - there it was!!! Bloody lovely.
Think I'll nip to the shops and get them in my latest.

I did 40g of crushed Coriander seeds in an all Munich malt brew with T58 yeast. My best beer yet! Even though it ended up under carbonated it was so drinkable.
