Cornelius keg hygene

Post by Sandybee » Mon Apr 16, 2012 4:35 pm

I finished off the contents of my first corny a couple of weeks ago. I cleaned it and sanitized it with 5*PBW, rinsed it out and injected CO2 into the sealed corny.

I'm just about to fill it up again with a mature batch of bitter. Do I need to clean or sanitize it again before filling?

I'll hold off till I get some advice.

Thanks.

Sandy

Yes, sanitise it. Why take the risk?

I can't speak for others but I rinse and clean cornies after they are used but I don't sanitise them until I am ready to fill them again. On kegging day they get a quick swill round with cold tap water and then are sanitised. I use idophor but it doesn't really matter which you use, as long as you use it correctly!

I'd suggest pressurising it slightly both with cleaner and with sanitizer and running some out through the output post. I tend to take at least the outlet post off every brew or two and clean it's pieces separately.

Thanks for that, especially the tip to run the sanitizer through the out post. Will disconnect out post next time, dismantle and clean it.

As per boingy, after use I just clean the cornie really well but don't sanitise until I'm ready to use it again.

Hello the allgrain boys.I'm over on the kit& kaboodle side but just happened to spot this thread.I bought my 6 cornies from Norm 3-4 years ago and dismantled, cleaned and sanitized them upon receipt.Since then all they got was a vigourous rinsing and a swirl of metabisulphite or,more recently,Star San.No hygiene problems to date.Hope this helps.

Metabisulphite isn't really strong enough to sanitise kegs IMHO. I rinse old yeast out, use 3% w/w caustic soda solution (care!!), rinse, then followed by videne. I only boil the posts/seals/rings every 3 or 4 uses.
