How longs a piece of string

Post by Technotrucker » Fri Apr 20, 2012 6:45 pm

I've been brewing for a number of years now, well 4 weeks back this Sunday I brewed a hoppie beer, think "Hopping Hare". Well It took off like a train for 3 weeks now we are into week 4 and it's still going a lot slower but you can see bubbles in the FV. I feel like saying enough is enough and bottling it this weekend.
I brewed a malty beer the following Sunday and that was almost finished by the middle of the 2nd week.

As anyone had the same with a brew??

Could it just be residual CO2 coming out of solution rather than full on fermentation?

Have you taken a hydrometer reading?

If it is still fermenting perhaps a gentle stir may help?

!, Don't think so, as I dropped it into a 2nd FV last Sunday, which is something I don't do.
2, Yes, I got a reading of 1.010 which says it's it's done.
3, What would that do ????

I had a similar issue when fermenting my last brew using WLP051 California Ale V Yeast everytime I walked past the fermenting fridge over a two period I could hear it bubbling. So I tested it with hydrometer 2 days running got a reading of 1.010 both times so dropped the temp to 10 oc for 7 days to drop the yeast and i'm gonna keg it this weekend.Did a brew at the same time with us05 and it was finished in 4 days. Don't know why one took so much longer both had same fermenting temp of 19oc.

This is weird, wonder if it's down to the yeast??? I used SO5 on this one.

I was thinking if it wasn't quite finished a gentle stir to re-suspend the yeast may encourage it to get a move on!

I'd just bung it in a keg/bottles, its finished fermenting so don't worry

I am a bit gung ho though

I wouldnt rely on visual signs which can be unreliable. Trust your hydrometer.

I bottle or keg when virtually clear, never used hydrometer....

Well I'm sure the above post about tacky clothes (not yours John!) aided Technotrucker greatly in solving his lingering fermentation problem. Cheers for that.

Hi BB.
That's another point, as it's still active it ain't clearing. I think the best thing to do will be put the FV in the shed where it's cold.

S-05 is a cracking yeast but takes longer to finish and clear than it's stablemate S-04..."I like it in pale beers"
Putting it in a cold place is a good idea to make the yeast head drop and clear the brew ready for kegging or bottles when it's finished.

US-05 is a repeating non flocculator, and the krausen stays for an age.

I use gelatine if i need the beer in a hurry :)
