Yeast overflow

Post by Dave S » Tue May 01, 2012 8:50 am

Hi All

I've just brewed a batch of dry stout, (fingers crossed there) and managed to get 25 litres instead of the intended 23, Slightly weaker but still 1042. In the past I've always racked off into a secondary FV after around 5 days, but this time I've decided to leave it closed under an air lock until barrelling time. Now, because the yield was slightly in excess, there has been some overflow of yeast down the side of the FV - not much, but it's there. My questions are, should I wait until the vigorous ferment has subsided then remove the lid and clean around the rim? (I've cleaned the drips from the side), Should I leave the lid on and clean as best I can under the rim with, say a sodium met-soaked cloth? or should I leave it alone until barrelling time?

Thanks for any advice here.
Best wishes

Dave

When I've had a yeasty explosion, I just mop up whats on the floor of the fridge and wipe round the top, outside, of the FV and leave be. The crusty deposits inside round the top of the FV can be a pain to clean once I've racked into a keg / bottles but it does no harm while fermenting.

Cheers,
Jamie

you could take the lid off to clean it up cus the brew will be protected by a layer of gas .thats why a l;ot of people brew uncoverved, but dont clean the yeast off the inside of the fv till you empty it
