You see lots of people quoting effeciency on here, especially if they seem to be getting good answers - but I'm pretty sure a large number of them are just using defaults in programmes and calculators and so are pretty inaccurate. If you persevere and understand it you'll be doing better than many :) Not that small differences in the absolute value really matter very much to most homebrewers, consistency is far more important so you can predict your grain bill properly.

As for batch sparging, its pretty foolproof really. I normally fly sparge partly because its harder to batch sparge bigger brew lengths and partly because my MT isn't big enough, but I've nothing against batch sparging. Its sometimes said that it gives lower efficiency, but whenever I've tried it the efficiency has been pretty comparable with fly sparging. Sadly I haven't have any eureka moments with it though.
