Whole Cone Hop Losses in the boil

Post by JammyBStard » Mon Sep 10, 2012 8:33 am

I undershot my volume yesterday viewtopic.php?f=24&t=53615 by about 5L (in a 40L batch) I know some of it was down to the high evaporation rate of my boiler and the length of the sparge but I think I also lost quite a bit due to about 245g (8.6 oz) of whole cone hops. This is the bit that bothers me because it has to be corrected in the mash!
I know there's too many factors for an accurate number but do we have an approximate figure for the volume of water X amount of hops soaks up?

1Kg of hops absorbs 15L of wort . . .and displaces 6L ;)

Thanks Ale man, that adds up nicely with what I found yesterday. Once I take off the Hop losses and adjust the evap rate for my boiler to 12% it all makes sense!
Hopefully the next brew will be spot on!

Is there a similar figure for pellets?
