Using Brupaks Malted Oats

Post by chrb » Sat Jul 28, 2012 4:33 pm

Hi,

Brupaks Malted Oats as they supply prepacked in 500g bag, does this need to be milled?

My LHBS supplied them as a replacement for flaked oats, normally I would just add flaked oats to the mash so that's what I did with the malted oats, but now I'm thinking that perhaps Brupaks don't supply them ready to use and I should've asked for them to be milled? Too late for this batch, but if it is necessary it's good to be informed for next time.

Cheers.

Best practice: yes, milled along with the rest of the grainbill. But oats are mainly for head retention, lace, plus a smooth and silky mouthfeel, which can be accomplished to a slightly lesser degree even if left whole. Whenever you have small quanities, you can just crush malt on your counter with a rolling pin, too.

How'd it turn out for you?
