I'm planning my 2nd AG and have come up with the following recipe, which I'm calling

All Fours

Batch Size: 23.000 L
Boil Size: 26.000 L
Boil Time: 90.000 min
Efficiency: 70%%
OG: 1.046
FG: 1.011
ABV: 4.5%%
Bitterness: 28.8 IBUs (Tinseth)
Color: 10 SRM (Morey)

Fermentables

Pale Malt 4.000 kg
Crystal Malt 400.000 g
Chocolate Malt 40.000 g
Golden syrup Sugar 400.000 g
Total grain: 4.840 kg

Hops

Challenger 8.1%% 34.000 g 90.000 mins (actually first wort hopping)
Golding 5.4%% 14.000 g 10.000 mins
Fuggles 5.2%% 4.000 g 10.000 mins

Yeast Safale S-04

Looks like a nice easy drinker.
Maybe lose (or reduce) the syrup, might make it too thin. And up the late hops to closer to 50g combined... or more?

Yep, I'd ditch the syrup. It won't add any flavour as it's more or less white sugar in syrup form. A SO says, it will thin the beer out too and you want body in an English ale.

I'm drinking my English ale now and it's delicious. Really full bodied; I used Danstar Windsor yeast for the first time and will DEFS be using it for my English ale from now on. Leaves a really malty profile. So impressed with it. Would really recommend it. Here's the thread on it: viewtopic.php?f=24&t=53094&hilit=+danstar

Thanks right the syrup is out :)

I'll up the MO a bit and rework the hops but I'm intending for it to be a lightly hopped one.

Goldings and Fuggles are pretty low in oils and are delicate compared to the high AA hops. You won't get much from them in low amounts in 23L. Even 50g of late hops will be pretty gentle.

tate and lyles (and ragus's)golden syrup is 76%fermentable. it closely resembles the make up of the old brewing sugar no.2 as used by higsons, so using a good golden syrup wont thin the beer out. and it does add flavour if used at the correct ratio.

information gleaned from ragus's technical department and ex head chemist of higsons who was in charge of quality control and a consultant brewer to robinsons, stuart thompson, a man whos forgotten more about brewing than ill ever know!
