Crisp Maris Otter

Post by Rubbery » Sun Sep 30, 2012 2:54 pm

The Malt Miller is selling Crisp Maris Otter for £23 for 25kg. Has anyone tried it? How does it compare to Fawcetts?

If there is little difference I will give it a try an save a few £.

I've just ordered a few kg of this from MM. It seems to have a better reputation than Baird's, which is what a lot of the HBS's seem to stock. Won't be using it for a few weeks, but I'm keen to see if there's an improvement on Baird's. I always get lower than calculated extract from that.
Best wishes

Ive done 4 x 20.5 litre brews with no problems have hit the numbers I was expecting (same as Fawcetts). Its a good price.
No inner plastic bag though.

No probs at all. My % extraction is where it should be. Unlike the bairds.

+1.

I've just used last of a bag in double-brew this weekend. No probs with mash efficiency or taste IMHO.

I've been using Crisps pale malt, which is slightly cheaper then the Maris otter from Rob the malt miller, and not found any difference from the more expensive malts. If any thing the extraction rates are slightly higher.

The Crisp MO from MM works well for me. I'm just about to finish my second sack and order a third.

Gets me 80+% extract every time, which suits me well.

No problem with the sacks having no lining. I weigh the malt into 2Kg bags as soon as it arrives. Seal them with clips and store them in a dustbin in the cool. I pull out 2 x 2Kg bags for every brew, and then weigh out any extra I need above the 4Kg from another bag. Simples!

I use the crisp pale malt, slightly cheeper, same extract and I can't tast the differance between it and the pricier MO brands that Rob stocks

In fact just ordered another bag today :-)

Same as Dennis and liquidman. I've just finished a sack of crisp pale malt, having always used Fawcett's maris otter before. No difference in taste and I've had slightly higher efficiency, so it's a winner for me.

I've got a sack of marris from my local well known home brew shop, I bought it believing it would be fawcetts...it certainly isn't. I'm yet to get anywhere near efficiency...crisp malt has a good reputation..I wish the stuff in my sack was half as good..I think I got chicken feed.

Hi Steve!

Have you mentioned to the HBS your issues?

What maltster was it from?

Are you sure its not a case of the 'flour' settling to the bottom of the sack and the husks being at the top?

I now allways up end the sack before openeing and this gives me consistant extract throughout the sack (a tip I got from here)

Cheers!

Guy

I've been using the Crisp Pale Malt for a while now. I have had the same experience as others, no noticable difference in taste, and an improved efficiency as well.
