This isn't the yeast section, but it might get more exposure here!
A short while ago I used a White Labs 023 yeast for a standard all grain brew. No starter, just pitched the vial as I always do.
It took ages to get going and, by the time the fermentation was over, it was clear it had become infected. It smelled and tasted horrid and went down the sink. The yeast was well within date.
I emailed Rob at "The Malt Miller" to let him know. I pointed out I wasn't looking for a refund or replacement, these things happen in brewing, but was interested to know if anyone else had had this problem.
He's got back to me and told me he's grateful for the info. I'm the second person to report this slow start with 023, so he's emailed his supplier. It'll be interesting to see what information comes back.
The reason for the post is to find out if anyone else has recently had difficulties with 023 and, if you have, have you yet contacted Rob, or wherever you bought it from?

Re: White Labs 023
I used 023 week before last, pitched cool at 16°C and left it. After 36hrs the krausen was nice and I racked it into carboy and upped the temperature to 19 where it went mad developing a 5" krausen. Upped again after four days to 21 . Will be kegging tonight I think so will let you know.
As an aside I had a TT yeast last month which after a week stank of rubber and tasted awful, after 2 week was no better. I had decided to chuck it but left it another week as I didn't need the carboy. I had a taste just before getting ready to throw it and it had totally turned around, a bit this but caramelly as you like. Its in the Keg now and drinking very well, a slight odour for a minute or two then its gone and all you get is caramel and toffee, the taste is the same, lovely I cannot believe I almost threw it

Re: White Labs 023
A quick update on this thread due to problems with the 023 yeast.
A week in the corny now, kept at +4 and it has not cleared one jot. The taste is "not right". Brewed as a split batch with another yeast and that one is fine and getting supped.
I would have blamed myself but for remembering this thread.
