Pearl Malt

Post by jakey.goodman » Mon Feb 06, 2012 3:18 pm

Hi all,

I think I may have found a local supply of malt, but the supplier has told me they use Pearl Malt instead of MO. Has anyone ever used pearl malt? Should I use it as a direct substitute to MO? Will there be a massive difference in flavour?

Thanks.
Jake

I doubt you will be able to taste any difference between any Pale Malts

Yes. Perle is just a newer more disease resistant variety.
I buy from The Malt Miller

Update to this 1 year on....

I have used a couple of bags of this malt over the last year and can safely say I have noticed no difference at all. Efficiency is the same as Maris Otter, as are the results. Perfect clarity and taste :-)

Its used commercially as an alternative to MO as its cheaper and the grains are slightly bigger. Ive tried 6 types of PA malt and never noticed any taste difference, how can you with all the other elements of brewing and science in there!!?!?
