Brewing over two Days

Post by JammyBStard » Thu Sep 12, 2013 3:47 pm

I've just checked the BBC and I see the wheather is going to be crap on sunday which was to be my brew day. It means either brewing in the rain
Or splitting the brewday over friday night and Saturday morning.
I'm thinking Mash and Sparge Friday night and boil saturday morning before she get's home with jobs for me.
Will unboiled wort spoil overnight? I'll keep it in a sanitised FV overnight but I worry it might bring things with it from the Mash.
Anyone tried it?

Done this a few times with no issues. Another option is to get the mash on tomorrow morning before work and finish off in the evening. You can obviously do other things (drink beer, eat curry, avoid SWMBO) while the boil is on. I've done this and been all done by 9pm.

I'll see how early in the day I can get the Mash on. I might have time to do it all. But if it looks iffy I''ll store the wort over night. I'm also waiting for some hops that should arrive at some time tomorrow!

Forgot to mention, the boiling process will kill off any nasties

+1
The mash enzymes will likely keep working, leading to a higher efficiency and thinner body than you're used to, but it won't be "spoiled" since you will be boiling and then adding your desireable yeast later.

Its an all Maris Otter mash so I dont think there will be too much left for the enzymes to work on.
Cheers guys

From my own point of view, my normal process is to mash and sparge Saturday evening, the boil early Sunday morning. My wort sits in the boiler over night and it's never caused me any problem. Go right ahead.

In the end I mashed and sparged last night and finished with the the boil this morning. and to be honest I think I might start doing it that way all the time from now on it was much less stressful. Especially with my crapy Immersion cooler. Id make a better one but the cheap Chinese plate coolers are also tempting.
