old hops. are they still useable?

Post by Deebee » Sun Jan 19, 2014 12:44 pm

I have just cleared my hop freezer. In the process i found an unused pack og 2010 warrior hops with an AA of 18.2. They are completelt vaccumm sealed and have been frozen since i got them.
Are they still useable and if so how much will the AA have dropped. I couldnuse these for a barley wine i have planned.
Thanks

They will be fine mate as you have stored them well, I have used hops that old that have been opened, resealed and frozen. Never noticed much difference, as far a alpha loss goes I couldn't say but just to be on the safe side I always use about 10% more.

Hope this helps

They should be fine, kept cool or cold they have quite a long life.

Kept somewhat warmer and starting to deteriorate then hops do get cheesy which is not nice, but even if they don't they lose the aroma and flavour oils. They become drier and flakier/dustier you can tell by handling them.

However the alpha acids undergo changes that if anything slightly INCREASE their effective bitterness. Unlikely in your case having been very cold.

Using older bittering hops is not a big problem. But generally I would be more careful of using older aroma hops.
