First lager..ish beer. Will it carbonate!?

Post by waltonburger » Sat Feb 01, 2014 11:25 pm

Today I have just bottled my first all grain beer.

I got the recipe from here http://www.amazon.co.uk/Booze-River-Cot ... 1408817934

Its basically lager ingredients plus a few extra bits but fermented to normal ale conditions and with ale yeast. I started with this because I was kind of interested to see if it would be any good and liked the idea of a very light refreshing ale.

The beer is ultra clear! As clear as you would wish after a few week conditioning. My question is (and this could be a very stupid noob question!!) ....will it still carbonate or has all the yeast died off?

Ive done kits before and 1 recipe from liquid / dry extracts and i've never seen a beer so clear when bottled.

I'm well prepared to be called stupid on this one!

Did you put any priming sugars in the bottles?

Yep, they are 500ml bottles and I used 1/2 tsp caster sugar per bottle as I normally do. I suppose my main concern was if there were any live yeast left considering it was so clear.

My extremely limited understanding was that once the yeast fermented, then cleaned the beer, it died off.

Looks great! Unless it's been filtered or pasteurised even the clearest beer will still have loads of yeast in it. Certainly enough to carbonate. I leave my lagers conditioning at zero degrees for upto three months and they always carbonate. Should be a cracker. Good luck with it. :D
If I had all the money I'd spent on brewing... I'd spend it on brewing!

Should carb up fine if you keep it at room temp for 2 weeks. You are right to ask though as clearer beer will have less yeast and take longer to carbonate than cloudy beer.
