Styrian recipe needed

Post by Tippler » Mon Feb 24, 2014 7:49 pm

I bought a load of Savinjski Goldings last year, and a lot are still sat in my freezer. Can anyone recommend a good recipe that's heavy on Styrians? I'm after something fairly pale and hoppy.

I'm not sure of forum etiquette for posting recipes. But if you google 'Styrian Stunner' you should hit the target pretty easily :)
it is a recipe from Marc Olloson's Real Ales For The Homebrewer, which is well worth getting a copy of.....if you get your timing right you can usually find a copy for around a fiver delivered. There are some great recipes to be had in that book ;)

Check the almanac. I think styrian stunner is there.

I did it and it was not to my taste, but thats just me. I found styrians great if they are left to age for a while though.

My favourite late hop and possibly the most versatile as it works well in a pale ale, Belgian or lager. So I wouldn't be in a rush to use it all at once. I would vac pack into 100g bags and use it over the next 12 months or longer.

The Hobgoblin clone somewhere in the recipe section has a lot of styrian and is one of the best beers I habe made lately.

That's Challenger and EKG isn't it? Not Styrian Goldings?

I think it's a fantastic tasting late/dry hop, but when I've used it, and especially when dry hopped, I've always thought the FV smelled absolutely foul. Maybe it's just me. It wouldn't put me off using it more anyway.

Thanks for the suggestions! I'm particularly taken with the Styrian Stunner and the Hobgobilin clone. But this raises another question: some of the recipes I've found for Orfy's Hobgoblin clone have "FWH" after the first hop addition. Apparently this means "First Wort Hops", where you add the hops to the grist and include them in the mash. I have never tried this, but it seems to me that if you chuck out these FWH, they won't get boiled so you won't get the same bitterness as you normally would from bittering hops.

Anyone care to enlighten me? And, if you've brewed Orfy's Hobgoblin clone, how did you do it?

Sorry, I got it wrong (not unusual!) The First Wort Hops are put in the boiler as the sparging starts, and left to steep, then to boil. But the question still stands "if you've brewed Orfy's Hobgoblin clone, how did you do it?"

I didn't FWH my version. I've tried FWH before and found little noticable effect except a slight drop in bitterness. So I wouldn't fret over it. It's a great recipe and would highly recommend - in fact I'm just about to pour one...
