Sparge temperature

Post by fisherman » Wed Mar 26, 2014 5:48 pm

Sorry lads I know this has been around the block for years. What temperature liquor in the HLT should be used if fly sparging?. I have 35 litres of liquor to be sparged through a Igloo cube 45 litre converted mashtun holding approx 10 kg of grain. I sparge at 1 litre per minute. Also what temperature should be at the base of the mashtun?.
My usual HLT liquor is heated to 77oC is this to hot?.
Thanks for any replies

You'll lose a few degrees in the sparge arm and tube. I generally aim for the high 70s - even as high as 80C.

As long as the grain bed stays below 75C or so you'll be fine.

Try not to take your grain bed higher than 77/78c as you'll run the risk of a starch haze in your final beer and also possibly a higher finishing gravity due to dextrins
