experimental first mash and home malting.
I have decided to try and malt some barley and make an experimental gallon of ale from it. I have only made a few beer kits before now but I love tinkering so I am really looking forward to this. I aim to malt 1.5kg of barley with a hope of getting a 50% conversion rate. Is the colour of the malt due to the drying procedure or perhaps toasting? I will buy some hops from my LHB for the mash, too. If it comes out well I will be ecstatic and I will buy a nice big SS pan. If it's simply not vile I will be happy

Hi Aethelstan
There was a post a while back, Subsonic malted his own Barley and Wheat.

Yes, I did a board search earlier. Very interesting and it's what made me decide to try it out

go for it! I had a go a few years back, and to be honest the brew came out just fine.
For me it was a learning curve and gave me an insight into malting. I wouldn't do it again as it is very
time intensive, but glad I did it a few times. There is loads of info on it about.
From memory, don't over wet the grains and keep them moved about to stop mould and drying out when complete is a bugger.
1.5kg is easily manageable, enjoy
