Summer beer

Post by Fugglechuggle » Fri Apr 25, 2014 9:44 pm

I'm planning on brewing a beer for summer. The goal is a low gravity, refreshing beer that isn't too bitter but with a nice hop kick. I'm about 10 brews into my grain brewing but don't have a lot of experience with wheat.

How does this recipe sound?

19 litre batch
2kg Maris otter
1kg wheat malt

Mashed at 66 for 1 hour

60 mins: 30g Saaz
0 mins : 30g Saaz

OG 1032

I know this isn't sticking to any particular style but I think it may be drinkable by mid June. Any input on yeast or maybe switching the hops would be greatly appreciated.

Should be a refreshing pint. But I doubt 30g of saaz would give you enough bitterness. Saaz is wasted as a bittering addition IMHO, why not bitter with magnum or Perle or any spare higher AA hops?

For the yeast I'd be tempted to go with something clean in order to let the saaz shine through.

But you won't go wrong with plenty of Saaz whacked in late! :D hopefully someone else will offer some suggestions!
Cheers and gone,

I've got some northern brewer in the freezer, might make for a better bittering hop. I'm worried about going over 25 IBU with it being such a low gravity beer. Most of my beers are over 6% and above 50 IBU.

I brewed a kolch style beer with saaz to 20 ibu's from memory and that was lovely if a bit sweet. Id say 20-25 ibu's is spot on :)
