Flowery/floral tasting and smelling hops.
Hi.
I am starting playing a little with simple grist and trying different hops and combinations. I am after a floral or fruity tasting hop, NOT citrus.
So it is said i am no longer huge fan of cascade, chinook etc. I use them in moderation but over here everyone overhops with them and they can be rather overpowering. I tasted a stout a short while ago that was heavilly hopped with Cascade. At the same micro i then tasted a brown ale, also heavilly hopped with cascade. So cascade and chinook are something i will not play with.
Are there any ideas? I have some experimental 366 and some archer ( never used either of them) and also the normal ones ike goldings challenger, styrians etc etc.
Thanks for your help as always

Belma has been said to have a lot of fruity tones, Although one taste review I've seen said bubblegum!
Just like trying new ideas!

I always find styrian goldings to have a very floral tone.

Dare I say it...... Centennial
A lot of people call it super cascade but for me they are quite different. I don't like the harsh grapefruit of overhopped cascade beers. Centennial is very floral but with much much much less Citrus/ grapefruit.

Re: Flowery/floral tasting and smelling hops.
I just brewed yesterday using 100% Nelson Sauvin for the first time. I was a bit hesitant at first as there are so many reports of overpowering grape aroma. I used 65g at various stages of the boil and intend to use the remaining 35g of a100g bag for dry hopping. At this stage I find the aroma gorgeous. It should make a very nice summer drinking blonde early June.
Best wishes
Dave

Can I suggest Bramling Cross.
It has an Unusual, but very pleasant Fruity Floral flavour and aroma.

Wow your right, I have just googled Bramling Cross and Cat P*ss and there was a big list of matches. Anyway I bought quite a bit last year and its been ok. I have used it at all stages. However there are a few hops that can have off flavours if your unlucky and maybe I got lucky with a good supply.Deebee wrote:Have heard of these. Meant to type this earlier but didn't have time.....
The thing about taste, is everyone has a different threshold for flavour and they interpret them in different ways. What might taste of heavenly, floral hoppiness to one drinker could be the proverbial cat pi$$ to the next. It can be a very personal thing.
It is interesting to get 3 or 4 people together to try some beers and get the opinions of those involved. There are some that will pick out very different flavour profiles to what others perceive and once you've listened to what others have said it is interesting to taste the beer again to see if you can pick up on those notes.
Yeast has a big part to play too and different yeast can express hop flavours in markedly different ways.

Sorry if I am a bit late in joining this thread, but just noticed it.
I brewed a beer with mainly Archer hops and a bit of Target for bittering recently. Very tasty indeed. One of my favourite brews so far. I would say there was more of a floral taste/aroma than the peach/apricot which they are said to have.

Actuallyni have dome archer.......
Re: Flowery/floral tasting and smelling hops.
I have used experimental 366 in my last two brews. Because of the high A/A rating I used a small amount at 5 mins to flameout and the other time at 15 mins to flameout. Very nice flavour , it tastes of fruit like tinned fruit salad with no citrus very nice. I have not had much of a drink of it as I like aged beer and time for it to mellow. If I was making a 23 litre brew I would try 15 min addition of 10 IBU. the hops I used with 366 were EKG pellet Fuggles pellet and Brewers gold leaf.
