Orange Peel - sweet, bitter, dry, fresh...!?

Post by Jambo » Tue Jun 17, 2014 2:15 pm

I love Witbiers. I am making one just now which called for 25g of bitter orange peel.

I see on Brew UK for example I can buy 50 g of sweet orange peel for 3 quid (+ postage obviously). For bitter, the only option from this vendor at least is 1 kg for 25 notes.

I can buy an orange for about 40 p. It's maybe just my Scottish blood, but buying orange peel seems like bad use of my hard earned.

I have searched the forum for this information without much success - can anyone enlighten me on the relationship between supermarket bought oranges and sweet and bitter peel from a HBS? Also recipes presumably give a dry weight, so using fresh orange peel would require a heavier weight for the same flavour, I assume.

FWIW, in the recipe mentioned above I threw in the peel of one orange which I weighed at about 50 g, I'll see how it goes!

Hi.

I have bitter orange peel but sell in 500g. I have been thinking for a while that it needs to be in smaller amounts. If you make and order I will put 25g in free for you. Having made a fair few Wits recently I would double that amount though so if you want 50g no probs

I have always found fresh zested oranges best in a Wit or similar

The Brewstore in edinburgh have curacao bitter orange peel for £2.50 for 50g

I've used it myself and it was excellent.

Rob,

Many thanks for the offer - I will give you a shot next time I am ordering online :)

Octoscott,

Cheers for the heads up on that, I always pop into Brewstore when I'm in the 'burgh so may well pick some up next time.

However - does anyone know - is this actually from a different type of orange to what you can buy fresh in the supermarket!?

Crookedeyeboy,
Thanks for the reassurance! Will hopefully be racking mine this weekend so will have a sneaky taste.
