Can somebody confirm I have the 'whirl pooling' concept correct.
I think the idea is to cause a whirl pool in the kettle/boiler after the boil to cause all the hops and other material to come away from the edges and settle in the bottom center of the boiler.
Can I recirc the hot wort around with a mag pump? And if so at what height would the flow and return be best placed at.
OR
Seeing as I'm probably going to oxygenate the wort with a paint mixer paddle for now (will look into gas eventually) will this mechanical action do this in the same step?
Thanks.
Lee.

Re: Whirl pooling Question.
Using a pump is fine as long as you get enough force to create a good vortex. Any obstructions like elements will interfere with the vortex a bit so the least of them the best.

I've got the set up so my CFC chills and whirl pools the colder wort back in to the boiler. I only use hops at this stage and apparently it gives better hop utilisation for aroma hops.
The whirlpool also mixes the hot and cold wort together so hopefully cooling is a little quicker and more uniform.
When it's cooled enough I then disconnect the CFC and pump straight into the FV. This gives the wort the added oxygen.
I get fairly clear wort as the hop debris clumps onto my flat hop filter at the bottom of the boiler.
It seems to work for me but as already described I get a build up around the tap fitting but not too much to worry about.
Cheers

Hi Hebb
That's a great idea, I wonder if this will work will with a hop rocket attached? As it will be recirculating through the hops.
Hmmmmm, interesting.
