Irish moss is this normal

Post by simon12 » Fri Nov 14, 2014 3:56 pm

I have made 12 AG batches so far 10 that are bottled and tasted and all but 1 drunk. For the 1st 5 I never used irish moss or anything else to clear it. The 1st time I used it I found the following:

1 Beer is very clear it certainly does what its supposed to
2 After primary fermentation the yeast is around half in floating clumps and the stuff not floating is in small clumps not really stuck to the bottom. Without the moss all the yeast would be in 1 clump all stuck to the bottom of the FV.
3 After finishing a bottle I can see small amounts of sediment in the bottom of the glass which stuck to the bottom of the bottle when pouring before using the moss.
4 The moss makes the beer taste slightly more watery and needs either higher carbonation or more body to counter it (my opinion).

After this batch I tried using a tiny pinch instead of a small tsp and found it makes the beer not as perfectly clear but does maybe 80% of the job but has none of the side effects. Is this experience normal and is there an exact best amount? I have used only Gervin GV12 yeast and made 23l batches so far.
