Couple of questions
Couple of questions
Areet! Just getting ready to transfer to bottling bucket. Last brew was a nightmare due to loose hops floating around. Tried putting a thin pair of tights over the syphon but it just clogged up. This one has been crash cooled so hopefully a lot has dropped out. What does everyone else do?
Also, I'm noticing that most of my beers have the same sort of twang. Its a bit sort of sour/cidery/random. Its as if I always use the exact same hop which gives this flavour but the last one had completely different hops to this one! Its like a fruity flavour. Not off putting but not what I would expect.
I ferment at 18 in a brew fridge so nice and controlled. I use starsan. I use different yeasts. Just not sure what it could be

Re: Couple of questions
Just thought actually, could put the tights over the end that goes in to the bottle bucket, not the end that goes into the primary if that makes sense?

Re: Couple of questions
Or just hold the siphon tube a few inches above the bottom so you're careful not to suck-up any trub or hop particles, even if that means the loss of a few pints...
Re: Couple of questions
Was a complete nightmare!!! The end in the fv clogged in seconds. I now have an oxidised batch ready to bottle! Think I'm just gonna stick to one bucket with the tap and use a hop bag from now on

Re: Couple of questions
you can jam a funnel up/around the siphon tube in the FV end. wrap the tights around that. makes a huge difference.
dazzled, doused in gin..
Re: Couple of questions
I've found transfers much easier since fitting taps to the FVs. You can tilt for the last few pints and leav only the trub behind - which I bottle for harvesting purposes.

Re: Couple of questions
Sour and cidery sounds like an infection. I had it in some early brews and it went when I switched to using star san.
Re: Couple of questions
Use a hop bag makes no difference to the test I had a problem once with infection and could not work it out.
In the end only thing a did different was treeing sterilizing the hops by scalding with hot water before adding to the brew I have never dry hoped agene.

Re: Couple of questions
I recently got a conical fermenter, big step forward... You can dump the trub from the lower valve, leaves the take off clear. It also has an air trap so you can leave longer to clear. I found this whole process so much easier now. Well worth the money.

Re: Couple of questions
Could you be more specific on that 'twang' you mentioned? Are all our beers tasting like this regardless of hops and malts etc?
Re: Couple of questions
You don't need to sterilise hops.billthedrill wrote:Use a hop bag makes no difference to the test I had a problem once with infection and could not work it out.

Hard to say, I've never been very good with 'tasting notes'.OilyGreasyPig wrote:Could you be more specific on that 'twang' you mentioned? Are all our beers tasting like this regardless of hops and malts etc?
Its like a fruity cidery kind of taste. Not bitter, sort of tartish. Nothing overwhelming but its a flavour that always seems to be there regardless of what hops/grain/yeast I use.

Re: Couple of questions
What water do you use? Has that been consistent for every brew?
Ingredients: Water, Barley, Hops, Yeast, Seaweed, Blood, Sweat, The swim bladder of a sturgeon, My enemies tears, Scenes of mild peril, An otter's handbag and Riboflavin.
Re: Couple of questions
Just from the tap mate, yeah that's always been the same. Was reading up that it could be oxygen, that can give a sherry sort of flavour?

Re: Couple of questions
I would go and get some Tesco Ashbeck water to try and rule out water chemistry.
