This years brew season is almost over for me. So i have started looking at recipes for next year. I already have too many but have gained an interest for a hop burst 15 minute Ipa.
Am thinking of using centennial, ah4anum and sorachie ace together.
Not a loved of masses of grapefruit but a pint once in a 2hile is ok. So....
Does this hop combo work?
Centennial, ahtanum and Sorachi Ace together?
Re: Centennial, ahtanum and Sorachi Ace together?
Hi Deebee,
There's no reason why it wouldn't work, but you've picked 3 really citrussy hops. Centennial is citrus and floral, athanum is citrus but a bit more lime than centennial, and sorachi ace is citrus but with a lemongrass/ coconut thing going on that I don't really like. I've no doubt a beer made with these would be perfectly fine and very much a prototypical american Pale Ale or IPA depending on your gravity.
If you want something slightly different you could go for a beer which maintains a little grapefruit but which would also brings in extra types of fruit. I'm currently drinking a 5% pale ale with 200g Mosaic (very fruity not so much citrussy) and a small amount of nelson Sauvin (40g - 15g for bittering and 25 late) and Athanum (about 30g at 30 min). It's pleasantly different from the grapefruit bombs I often make (and also like).

I will have a rethink on the hops.
i am looking for something that is refreshing yet tasty without being too much.
i made a 100% nelson a couple of years back and it took me 2 years to drink it. It was too much.
over here the c hops are misused and abused. Something that has put me off of the grapefruit like hops.
i dont want it overpowering though.
i also want to use what i have without buying more. Got a message last week i am being laid off just before christmas so spending has to take a cut as well.
i will have a look at what i got. Then repost a new thread and i am sure you guuys will be able to help.

Yeah that sucks Deebee, sorry mate. I can sympathise too - I know exactly what it's like to be unemployed in a foreign country - even if it's "home"... I hope it's just a break that will lead to better things

Deebee, I highly recommend brewing your House Brown Ale with just a little Centennial for bittering, then a mix of your Ahtanum and Archer late hops.
Save your Sorachi Ace for a separate single hops brew, for instance, a nice grainy saison-type thing with Belgian yeast would be perfect.

I was looking at a late hopped only IPA type rather than a brown to be honest.seymour wrote:Deebee, I highly recommend brewing your House Brown Ale with just a little Centennial for bittering, then a mix of your Ahtanum and Archer late hops.

That sounds great too.Deebee wrote:I was looking at a late hopped only IPA type rather than a brown to be honest.
Oh you lucky dog! That hop gives some cool peach/apricot/melon fruit aspects which combined with your citrusy Centennial and Ahtanum would be quite a fruit salad.Deebee wrote:...I have some el dorado too I think
