Water/Grain Ratios

Post by jceg316 » Mon Jan 05, 2015 5:27 pm

Hey everyone. I was coming out with some great brews, and I even managed to replicate the same one twice a couple of times hitting the same OG & FG, very similar tastes etc. However I was measuring everything in imperial because that's what the majority of recipes were in. I've switched to metric as it's way easier when calculating quantities needed to purchase and measuring out bottles, but something has got lost in translation.

My water/grain ratio is way off, and I include sparge water quantities are included in that. One brew came out at 1.060 when it was supposed to be 1.080, and another I aimed for 1.070 but I got 1.090. I had miscalculated when changing from lb>KG and gallons>litres. Doing research I read that 3L/KG is a good starting point (equal to 1.5quarts/lb). I know this is very system specific but having a ballpark figure is really helpful, what thickness in metric terms do you all go for and why? And how much sparge water do you use?

Also it would be good to discuss: having a set amount of strike water/grain ratio means that every brew comes out as the same gravity. To raise or lower a gravity is it dependent on the amount of sparge water the kettle is topped up with? So for example a higher gravity brew will be cut with less sparge water whereas a lower gravity brew will contain more?

Thanks for your help
