Cornelius Keg Dry Hopping Question
Cornelius Keg Dry Hopping Question
Hi
I'm going to 'dry hop' in the keg for the first time and thought I would just throw leaf hops in loose. Anything wrong with that plan? I think the possibility of them clogging up the take off tube is pretty slim as they would mostly float on the surface.
I don't get why tying them in a bag on a length of floss is any better, surely as the beer level goes down the bag will just be left high and dry?

Re: Cornelius Keg Dry Hopping Question
Won't leaving the hops in for too long lead to a grassy flavour? I always thought you either want to dry hop for a few days or hop it with a randalizer at the point of serving.

They will clog the tube. They did for me at leastBrewceter wrote:Hi

Ok that's helpful, I'll bag them then. Should I bother tying to post with floss that people seem to do though?
Re: Cornelius Keg Dry Hopping Question
It'll all be gone in 3 weeks, sadly! so I don't believe grassiness will be a problem but we'll see.BenB wrote:Won't leaving the hops in for too long lead to a grassy flavour? I always thought you either want to dry hop for a few days or hop it with a randalizer at the point of serving.

You won't get a grassy flavour it's a myth. ..old hops and grain can cause it but I'm yet to taste it from dry hops.
Just think about the history of IPA.
If you can handle a few floaters in your beer them just put them in the keg. I've seen people using tea infusion balls which look a good idea but I've also found a hop tea works a treat.

You can get the 3" (75mm) tea balls which fit in a cornie Nicly for about £1-1.20 on eBay the bigger ones are cheaper than the small.alix101 wrote:You won't get a grassy flavour it's a myth. ..old hops and grain can cause it but I'm yet to taste it from dry hops.

The only prob is hop utilisation if you suff it full of hops, so get 2 and use both, I stuffed 20g in one which did not work as well as 2 with 10g each.
And you may want to weigh them down.

I kegged hopped a corny with about 40g of cascade pellets in a tea ball, got a strong vegetable flavour that took a few weeks to shift
Once it did it was superb
I only used one tea ball so they were pretty packed in, smaller amounts in 2 more balls like a previous posted said would be the way to go I reckon.
